Garrett Barry’s

Garrett Barry’s is one of the first jigs I ever learned. It is a common session tune  associated with the blind piper Garrett Barry from Inagh, in Co. Clare.

It can be found on the album The Russell Family of Dolin, Co. Clare, played by Gussie Russell on the flute, and also on the band Moher’s album Over The Edge.

  1. Thanks so much for this, I heard this tune at a session and was very excited to learn it. Any opinions on good tunes to pair with it?

    1. Hi “A”! Thank you for the comment, “Garrett Barry’s Jig” is a great tune indeed 🙂 A jig in G major would go well after it, when I just played it there I went kind of automatically into “The Maid On The Green” (https://tunesfromdoolin.com/maid-on-the-green/), I just play a high F# before the first phrase |gfg e2d| to link the two tunes, I think it gives a nice lift. I hope that helps 🙂

  2. Hi Charles I love your style of playing its very relaxed and not rushed what make of concertina are you playing

  3. Thank you so much “Anonymous” 🙂 Really appreciate the kind words! The concertina I use in this video is a 7Mount, made by Ralf Schlimm who is now based in Feakle, Co. Clare. There are wonderful instruments, I have it almost 7 years now and it’s getting better and better with age, nice sweet tone and great action. Feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions!

Maid I Ne’er Forgot (The)

“The Maid I Ne’er Forgot” is often played before the “Lads of Laois”, another great reel. They were recorded together by Nollaig Casey & Arty McGlynn. I learned it here in Doolin though, from sessions with Christy Barry, Colin Nea and the great Michael Kelleher on fiddle.
