Maids of Mitchelstown (The)

The Maids of Mitchelstown is a wonderful tune that was made popular by The Bothy Band, on their album Out Of The Wind Into The Sun. I believe the original key was D minor, and I learned it in that key from my friend Tom Delany. It is also quite common in E minor in sessions around Doolin, as recorded by the great band Moher. Below are the two versions.

“The Hare’s Paw” was one of the first reel I ever learned. I got it from my friend Stéphane and Paul Dooley (fiddle/harp) at a session in McHugh’s Pub in Liscannor. A common set in the area is to play “The Hare’s Paw” before another great tune, “The Concert Reel”.

I learned the jig “Donnybrook Fair” from the playing of concertina player Dympna O’Sullivan. It is a common session tune, which was also recorded by Josephine Marsh on the album “To Meet A Friend” with Cyril O’Donoghue.

Trip We Took Over The Mountain (The)

I learned this beautiful waltz from Eugene Lambe, a great piper and whistle player who did a huge amount of work recording the older musicians of North Clare back in the early 90s. Eugene learned “The Trip We Took Over The Mountain” from the playing of Micho Russell.
