Morrison’s Jig

Morrison’s Jig is a very common Irish session tune associated with the great fiddler James Morrison from Sligo, who emigrated to America in 1915. I associate this tune with my friend Adrian McMahon, a great flute player from Kilfenora who learned many tunes from Peader Reilly. Kevin Griffin, the great banjo player from Doolin, recorded this tune on the album Across The Pond with Roger Burridge (fiddle), Roger Shorrock (bouzouki) and Quentin Cooper (guitar and mandolin).

This tune was requested by Chris Alley on YouTube.

Josephine Begley’s

I first learned “Josephine Begley’s” many years ago from Terry Bingham’s album, on which he calls this tune “Mairtin O’Connor’s”. I only found out in February 2021 that this hornpipe was in fact a composition of Frankie Gavin. It is the great flute and concertina player from Laois Tommy Fitzharris who provided me with this information.

Flowers of Red Hill (The)

I learned “The Flowers of Red Hill” from Tom Delany and Blackie O’Connell at a session in McGann’s Pub. The Bothy Band recorded it on their album “After Hours”.

Cat That Ate The Candle (The)

“The Cat That Ate The Candle”, which I learned from the late Frankie Kennedy (Donegal flute player, founding member of Altan), is one of the few tunes on this site that actually has nothing to do with Doolin. It is simply the opening reel of one of my favourite tracks ever, Frankie’s solo on Altan’s very first album.
